Ports Online
"Don't Lose Money or Sleep Regarding Movement of Cargo Information within the South African Port System"
Transnet National Ports Authority has embarked on an initiative to implement a Business Portal (Ports Online) in 2006 which will provide a centralized real-time integrated web-enabled electronic port information system that facilitates business-to-business communication and transactions amongst players in the port and shipping community in the South African port system.
The basic concept of the Business Portal is to: electronically link all parties in the port and shipping community together onto a common and neutral information platform, enabling real-time information flow and transactional service delivery in a manner that is visible to all relevant parties.
The Benefits to be derived from PortsOnline
- Computerised Process: Cost savings less errors and better productivity, which streamlines activities and reduce port related charges.
- Better Decision-Making: Up to date information and exception notification to both shipping lines and exports/importers. Efficiency use of Equipment and resources: Tug & pilots and berth application by shipping lines.
- Common and Standardised system for all parties: Creates - interlinkages with other system utilised (third parties) by port users thus creating a common ground upon which trade transaction information could be accessed.
- Cost Effectiveness due to Internet Technology Capabilities:- minimal start-up cost in accessing informa tion from the Portal wherever one operates from.
