LOCATION: Latitude 34 22’ 31”S and Longitude 21 25’ 9” E 
 
Mossel Bay holds a special place in South African maritime history for this is the first recorded place used regularly along the South African coast by European seafarers journeying to the East. It is situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth at Longitude 22º 08' E and Latitude 34º 08' S and is the smallest of the commercial Ports along the South African coast. Mossel Bay is also the home of Mossgass (Petro SA) and oil industries projects started in 1980’s, though it deals mostly with fish industries. Mossel Bay is the only South African port that operates two off-shore mooring points within the port limits.

The closest airport is George (approx. 50 km) which has flights to all the major airports within South Africa.  Mossel Bay forms part of the Garden Route which is a mainly tourist attraction within the Western Cape..

FISHING INDUSTRY
Mossel Bay is the major base for the fishing industry of the region with sophisticated facilities for processing catches and the maintenance of the international fleets.
 
FRESH WATER
Available at all berths on request.
 
HAZARDOUS CARGO
Arrangements for the handling of hazardous cargo must be made through the Harbour Master. Vessels carrying explosives or dangerous goods are restricted to arrival and movement within the port during daylight hours.
 
HOURS OF BUSINESS
The Port of Mossel Bay operates from Monday to Friday from 06h00 to 18h00 only.

Prevailing winds are SW (predominant throughout the year), NW (winter) and SE (summer), but wind directions and velocities are subject to rapid change without warning.  Average wind force is between 10-25 knots.  Heaviest seas and swells are predominant SE’ly and accompany the SE winds.  SW’ly winds seldom cause swell problems.
